The video thumbnail is a reference to the iconic shot of the colossal titan’s rising over Wall Maria.

scene setup

A plane mesh was used as the reference ground and as a Shadow catcher. An in-game screenshot of Interchange was used as a camera background (Data/Background Images). The camera focal length was set 18mm to match the in-game field-of-view of 90°. Then, the camera was moved until the positioning of the ground and the perspective effect on the foreground character looked correct.

A vertical plane mesh was used as to locate the position of the mall in the scene. A giant Killa was then placed near this reference.

Killa’s hand is scaled up to make it seem closer than it really is. It also positioned closer than his arm would normally allow, which is not visible with the render camera angle.

The scene is mainly lit by a single Sun source, but there are also area lights behind Killa’s face shield : otherwise, his face would not be visible.

The scene was rendered on a transparent background and placed over the screenshot in GIMP. Then, the lower parts of Killa’s body are erased to make it look like he is standing behind the mall.
